Is a cheap website worth it? What $500 gets you versus $2,500

· 2 MIN READ

The honest difference between a budget template site and a professionally built one, and when the cheap option is genuinely the right call.

Sometimes the cheap option is the correct option. If you need a single page with your phone number and opening hours so people can find you, a $500 template site does that job and there is no reason to spend more. This post is about knowing which situation you are actually in.

What the budget end genuinely gives you

  • A working site with your name, contact details, and a few paragraphs of copy
  • A template that hundreds of other businesses also use
  • Mobile responsiveness, usually adequate
  • Very little control over how you appear in search results

For a sole trader whose customers arrive by word of mouth and just need to check you exist, that is enough. Spending $2,500 on that scenario is waste.

Where the cheap option starts costing money

The trouble begins when the website has a job to do beyond existing. Specifically, when it needs to generate enquiries.

  • Template sites are built for the average business, so they do not say what makes yours different. Visitors leave without a reason to pick you.
  • Page speed on cheap builders is frequently poor, which hurts both conversion and search ranking.
  • You often cannot change the structure, so as your business changes the site cannot follow.
  • Migrating away later costs more than building properly would have, because content has to be rebuilt by hand.

A simple test

Work out what one new customer is worth to you over a year. If a single extra enquiry a month would cover the difference between the cheap site and the professional one, the professional one pays for itself almost immediately. For most trades, professional services, and anyone selling anything above a few hundred dollars, it does.

If you genuinely cannot connect the website to revenue, that is useful information too. Spend the minimum and put the money somewhere it does connect.
