The local search work that produces results for a New Zealand business, in priority order, starting with the free part.
For most New Zealand service businesses, the top three results for a search like 'web design Auckland' are not organic results at all. They are the local pack, which comes from Google Business Profile. That is the highest return work available and it costs nothing but time.
Start with Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your listing. Verification can take a week or two, so start now.
- Choose the most specific primary category available, then add secondary ones.
- Fill in every field. Hours, service area, attributes, description.
- Add real photos, and keep adding them. Listings with recent photos perform better.
- Ask satisfied customers for reviews, and reply to every one, including the negative ones.
Then get your citations consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should be byte for byte identical everywhere they appear. Inconsistency confuses the signal. Worth checking:
- Yellow Pages NZ
- Neighbourly
- NZ Business Directory listings relevant to your industry
- Your own website footer, which should match exactly
- Facebook and LinkedIn pages
Location pages, done properly
If you serve several areas, a page per area can work. The catch is that near identical pages with the suburb name swapped are thin content and get treated as such. A location page earns its place when it has genuinely local material: work you have done there, a local phone number, area specific detail.
Three real location pages beat twenty templated ones. If you cannot write something genuinely specific about an area, do not make a page for it.
What to measure
- Google Business Profile insights: how many people called, requested directions, or visited the site
- Search Console: which queries bring impressions, and where you rank for them
- Actual enquiries, tagged by how they found you, which means asking
That last one is the only number that matters commercially, and it is the one most businesses never collect.
